After many months of producing high end Android smartphones such as the Sensation and EVO 3D, HTC has turned their attention back to the mid-range market with their latest offering. The Explorer seeks to make a name for itself in the section of the market that had been conquered by HTC’s earlier Wildfire and Wildfire S smartphones.

Like the Wildfire handsets the Explorer runs on Android. This is a more up to date version though, and the Explorer is probably the smallest smartphone running Android Gingerbread. It is also one of the first phones to come with HTC Sense 3.5. This adds a number of new benefits and features to the popular interface and most noticeably ushers in the first major aesthetic change for quite some time.

If there is one trend that has been developing in the last 12 months it is one towards ever larger smartphones, with most phones now having a screen in the region of four and a half inches. This is great news for some people – but for many of us with smaller hands this is a bit of a worrying trend.

As this HTC Explorer deals review states, “Although the screen is a little smaller than the ones found on top HTC models it is still great for entertainment features such as video, with good support for music and video available through the phone?s media players.”

The Explorer is able to offer decent entertainment features even though it has a much smaller screen. For a great deal many people this screen is more desirable as it results in a phone that is easier to fit into a pocket or bag.

Otherwise, the Explorer looks much like a scaled down version of some of HTC’s other Android smartphones, with the distinct Android look and feel to it. It ticks all the right boxes in terms of connectivity, including Wi-Fi and 3G, so it is still an excellent device for all things online. This includes just general web browsing, YouTube usage and of course social networking with Facebook, Twitter and all the others.

The only let down of the Explorer is perhaps the camera. At 3 megapixels it is not amazingly fantastic and the video leaves a bit to be desired as well. Without a flash its usage is somewhat limited. A better camera could have easily been added into this phone – although maybe that would have added a little more to the price – which as it stands is very desirable.

  1. The phone looks great but i don’t think it would make a buzz in the market. Nowadays, camera plays a vital role in the handset. People are fond of taking pictures from their phone and a 3 megapixel would really discourage users. It would have been best if they developed a five or perhaps an eight megapixel camera in order to avoid hesitations from buyers.
