As the Rolling Stones once sang, “you can’t always get what you want”. This would seem to be the case with the latest iPhone, as there were many new features that people were expecting to see that didn’t make an appearance. Even the phone itself – people wanted an iPhone 5, instead we got an iPhone 4S. But as the song continues, “sometimes you get what you need.”

The iPhone 4S may not include all of the latest features that were expected in the iPhone 5, but it brings enough to the table to satisfy the needs of iPhone owners in light of recent industry developments. What did we miss out on then? Or rather, what do we feel we missed out on with the coming of the iPhone 4S?

Well the most obvious thing we didn’t get was the iPhone 5 itself in name or in fact in any form. The lack of the new device and the continuance of the older device in the form of the iPhone 4 have left a bitter taste in a number of people’s mouths. It has since come to light that the iPhone 5 was supposed to be launched alongside the 4S, so this news will go some way to explaining all the earlier rumours that we were hearing.

With the iPhone 4S though, we still continue with the same shape of phone even though iPhone 5 rumours had led us to expect aluminium backed models with amazing looks and tear drop shaped rears with no bezels and curved glass screens. We wouldn’t have really cared for any of these individual things, though it would have been nice to see a change of shape in one form or another.

The screen also remains the same in resolution size and also in physical size. This is another shame as we were most sure about an increase in screen size if anything else from the increase in the phone. This would have brought the iPhone 5 in line with many of the bigger devices out there and meant it was a contender for watching movies on as well as a number of other things. There is far from anything wrong with the screen on the iPhone 4S, though it would have been nicer to see a little change.

Other innovations in the browsing area would have obviously come from this and we even heard of the device having a physical BlackBerry like keyboard. This would be amazing for those that use the device as a business one, which many people do. However, it is not likely considering Apple’s love of the full screen product.

Unlike the teardrop design and larger screen though, a physical keyboard was never going to be included on the iPhone 5. This sliding QWERTY iPhone probably never existed outside of a few fans heads. The iPhone 4S remains simply a touchscreen phone, as will the iPhone 5 when it is finally launched next year, and most likely every other iPhone released after that.

As it turns out, some of the features that were expected to make an appearance in the iPhone 5, like an 8 megapixel camera, and the A5 processor, did in fact make an appearance on the iPhone 4S. We were also greeted by some unexpected software improvements like Siri and iMessage. So while there may have not been any major cosmetic changes, the iPhone 4S does actually bring a whole lot to the table. There may be a lot of people who wanted a new phone design – but the iPhone 4S gave customers what they actually needed.

One Response to “The New iPhone – What We Wanted and What We Didn’t Get”

  1. Even though people were disappointed when they first heard of iPhone 4S, it was still one of the most in demand phone in 2011. It satisfied a lot of users and according to Apple 79% of users were contented from iPhone 4S compared to the previous version which was only 73%. People may have been frustrated but Apple brought us a phone that we needed and put voice recognition to the next level.
